Our Experience Buying Undisclosed Beryllium-Treated Sapphires at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show

Every year, we make an annual pilgrimage from New Zealand to Tucson, Arizona, to attend the largest gem and mineral show in the world. Our objective is to hunt for sapphires and other gemstones to bring back to New Zealand and sell into the Australasian market. For the most part, our experience has been positive: meeting gem dealers and jewellers from around the world and buying unique stones.

This year, however, we had the unfortunate experience of being taken advantage of. This specifically happened at the G.W. Holidome Show.

An important part of being a reputable gem dealer is nurturing trust. Nurturing trust means standing by your product and being open and honest about what you are selling. On our last day of the show, we came across a booth selling a lovely selection of gemstones. It was run by a family that had been in the industry for generations and clearly knew gems very well. The dealer showed me his stock, and I admired their selection of tanzanite and opals. He then pulled out a tray filled with royal blue and midnight blue sapphires.

Because we mainly deal in sapphires, this selection immediately piqued our interest. After taking a closer look under a loupe, we began talking about price, and the dealer was adamant that they all needed to be sold as a lot. He confirmed that they were of Sri Lankan origin and heat-treated, which is generally expected with sapphires. He did not disclose any other treatment.

We made a deal, paid the dealer, and returned home to New Zealand.

Upon inspecting the sapphires under a microscope, we noticed colour pooling around the facets. This is very hard to see under a loupe, but much easier to detect under a high-powered microscope. It immediately alerted us that all was not as it seemed. The dealer may have been hiding further treatment on these sapphires.

To protect our customers from dishonesty in the trade, we obtain gem lab reports on the large majority of the sapphires we stock. We sent the lot of blue sapphires to Bangkok for assessment, and all but one came back as “BE – Beryllium Treated,” rendering them almost worthless to us compared with what we had paid under the impression they were heat-only.

We had been cheated. It is a gem seller’s duty to understand their stones and disclose any treatments a gemstone may have undergone. Wilfully selling another business beryllium-treated sapphires under the guise of heat only is deeply dishonest and, in some countries such as New Zealand, could amount to misleading conduct and raise serious issues under consumer law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Upon discovering that we may have been duped, we gave the dealer the benefit of the doubt and asked for a return and refund. We hoped he might simply have been unaware of the treatment himself. It quickly became apparent that the money was more important than conducting honest business, and we are still waiting for him to agree to a return.

The Sapphire Merchant’s Guide to Beryllium-Treated and Titanium-Diffused Sapphires

Sapphires are one of the most sought-after precious gemstones and form part of the traditional “Big 3” coloured stones: sapphire, ruby, and emerald.

They occur in a full spectrum of colours and qualities, but did you know that many sapphires are treated to enhance their natural beauty, colour, and appearance?

This guide explores treated natural sapphires, with a focus on beryllium treatment, titanium diffusion, and standard heat treatment.

What is Beryllium-Treatment in Sapphire?

Beryllium treatment is a modern method used to change or intensify a sapphire’s appearance, creating a more desirable or more marketable colour. Sapphires are heated to extremely high temperatures in a diffusion process while exposed to the element beryllium. In its ionic form, beryllium is small enough to penetrate deep into the sapphire, causing a significant change to its colour.

Is beryllium-treatment the same as titanium-diffusion treatment?

No. Titanium-diffused sapphire is created using a treatment process in which near-colourless sapphire is heated to extremely high temperatures with titanium and a trace amount of iron to create a brighter colour. This treatment generally produces a layer of colour concentrated near the surface of the stone.

So what is the difference between beryllium treatment and titanium diffusion?

Aside from using different elements, titanium diffusion creates colour primarily at or near the stone’s exterior. Beryllium treatment penetrates much deeper into the crystal structure. In simple terms, the key difference is the depth of colour penetration: titanium is surface-oriented, while beryllium can extend much further into the stone. Titanium diffusion is the older treatment; beryllium diffusion is the newer and more sophisticated one.

What colours can beryllium-treatment create or change in sapphires?

Beryllium treatment was introduced into the sapphire market in the early 2000s, when unusually large numbers of sapphires were discovered to display the rare pinkish-orange padparadscha colour. These stones were tested, and findings showed they had been diffused with beryllium. (Lalous, 2014) Because the treatment was so difficult to detect, many were initially mistaken for naturally coloured stones.

It was later discovered that beryllium treatment was being used to alter sapphires into a much wider range of colours, not just the highly sought-after padparadscha shade.

Are Beryllium-Treated or Titanium Diffused Sapphires Worth Less?

Beryllium-treated and titanium-diffused sapphires are still genuine sapphires. However, their colour has been artificially enhanced by modern treatment. Because of this, they are usually worth less than comparable natural sapphires of similar appearance when all other factors are equal.

Untreated sapphires with strong, desirable colour are rare, and that rarity contributes significantly to their value. When treatment is used to mimic that same appearance, the value is generally lower.

According to GIA (Gemological Institute of America), heat-treated sapphires are common and broadly accepted in the trade. For fine-quality sapphires, however, an unheated stone, or one with no detectable evidence of heat treatment, may be considered rarer and more valuable.

Can a jeweller or buyer tell if a sapphire
is beryllium-treated or titanium-diffused?

A professional jeweller or gemologist, especially someone with formal training such as a G.G. (Graduate Gemologist), or someone with extensive hands-on experience handling stones and jewellery, may be able to spot indicators that a stone has undergone treatment.

That said, identifying the exact treatment is not simple.

Lab assessment to detect Beryllium-Treated Sapphires

In many cases, the sapphire must be sent to an independent gem laboratory for professional evaluation.

Testing methods may include:

1. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS)

2. Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS)

3. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)

Professional laboratory reports can help determine whether a stone has undergone heat treatment, diffusion treatment, trace-element introduction, or whether it is untreated/unheated.

The 2.89ct ‘Padparadscha’ Sapphire is retested at a trusted lab, where the treatment is identified and correctly noted on the lab report. The sapphire cannot be given a padparadscha grade when it has undergone beryllium treatment, even if it displays ‘Pinkish-Orange’, which is classed as the padparadscha colour.

Is Beryllium-Treatment or Diffusion Bad or Unethical?

These treatments are not inherently unethical or “bad.” The ethical issue arises when they are not disclosed.

Problems begin when treated stones are misrepresented in a way that makes them seem rarer, more natural, or more valuable than they really are. Purchasing your gemstones and jewellery from reputable dealers, and having important stones independently certified by a respected laboratory goes a long way toward transparency.

Professional certifications from reputable gem labs provide crucial information about a gemstone’s identity, quality, and treatment status. Understanding those factors helps a buyer assess whether the stone is worth the asking price.

Are these treatments permanent?

Yes. Both beryllium treatment and titanium diffusion are considered permanent treatments because they involve extremely high temperatures and chemical elements that permanently alter the sapphire’s chemistry and colour appearance.

Can a beryllium-treated or titanium diffused sapphire be repolished or recut?

If a titanium-diffused sapphire is recut or polished, its appearance may be permanently altered. This is because the colour is concentrated close to the surface.

Beryllium-treated sapphires usually have deeper colour penetration than titanium-diffused stones, extending further into the crystal structure. This may allow for some repolishing without dramatic colour loss, but expertise is still required.

Important note: Any stone that has undergone diffusion-style treatment should be handled with care, because treatment may not penetrate the entire stone evenly. Recutting or repolishing can therefore affect the final appearance.

Here is a simple breakdown of the three treatments:

Beryllium-treated sapphires: These stones are exposed to beryllium and intense heat, enhancing or changing the sapphire’s colour. Beryllium diffuses deep into the crystal structure and can produce a wider range of colours because its atomic size allows it to penetrate further into the stone.

Titanium-diffused sapphires: Titanium diffusion is concentrated near the surface of the sapphire, creating stronger colour close to the exterior. This older treatment method is most commonly associated with blue sapphire.

Heat-treated sapphires: These are natural sapphires heated at high temperatures without additional colouring elements such as beryllium or titanium being introduced. Heat treatment can improve colour and clarity by reducing the visibility of certain inclusions and improving the stone’s overall appearance.
