Australian Sapphires

There's something unmistakably magnetic about Australian sapphires, revered for their vibrant, saturated colour, and natural, distinctive beauty. Their colours are not perfect in a polished, predictable way. They are moody, elemental, and alive. Teals that shift like deep water, inky blues with green undertones, sunlit yellow, and the famous parti sapphire, where multiple colours blend in a single stone. Australian Sapphires
Frequently Asked Questions

What are Australian sapphires?

Australian sapphires are natural sapphires that have formed within the Australian landscape over millions of years. Like all sapphires, they belong to the mineral family corundum, but Australian sapphires have developed a distinctive identity for their incredible diversity of colour. While Australia is historically known for deep blue sapphire, its deposits also produce beautiful teal, green, parti-colour, yellow and occasionally pink sapphires.

One of the most exciting qualities of Australian sapphire is how individual each stone can be. Parti sapphires, in particular, can display two or more colours within a single gemstone, often blue, green and yellow, creating colour patterns that are completely unique.

Where in Australia do sapphires come from?

Australia's most important sapphire deposits are found along the eastern side of the country, particularly in Queensland and New South Wales. Central Queensland's sapphire fields around Anakie, Rubyvale and Sapphire are among the country's best-known sources, while the New England region of New South Wales, including areas around Inverell and Glen Innes, has also produced Australian sapphire for generations. These ancient deposits have yielded an extraordinary spectrum of colours. Even sapphires recovered from the same region can look remarkably different from one another, which is part of what makes sourcing Australian sapphires so fascinating.

What is the rarest colour of Australian sapphire?

Some of the rarest Australian sapphires are found in pink and pinkish hues, with fine examples occurring far less frequently than the blues, greens and parti-colours for which Australia is better known. Stones displaying particularly vivid, attractive colour combined with good clarity can be exceptionally difficult to find.

Rarity, however, isn't simply determined by colour. An Australian sapphire with an unusual combination of colours, exceptional saturation, clarity and an attractive natural colour pattern can be considerably rarer than another sapphire of the same general hue. This is especially true of remarkable parti sapphires, where nature has created a completely individual pattern within the stone.

Are Australian sapphires valuable?

Yes. Australian sapphires can be very valuable, but there is an enormous variation in quality and price. The value of an Australian sapphire is determined by factors including its colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, treatment and overall rarity. Fine sapphires with beautiful saturation, excellent clarity and an exceptional cut can command significantly higher prices than commercial-quality material.

Australian sapphire was historically associated with very dark blue stones, but this represents only one part of what Australia produces. Today, fine teal, blue-green and parti-colour Australian sapphires are particularly sought after by collectors and jewellery clients looking for something distinctive. Exceptional natural stones, particularly those with beautiful colour and minimal or no treatment, can be both rare and highly desirable.

Can I use an Australian sapphire for an engagement ring?

Absolutely. Australian sapphires are an excellent choice for engagement rings. Sapphire measures 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it one of the hardest natural gemstones on Earth and particularly well suited to jewellery that is worn every day.Beyond their durability, Australian sapphires offer something wonderfully individual. From classic blue through to teal, green and spectacular parti-colour stones, they allow you to choose an engagement ring that feels distinctly your own. For someone wanting a natural gemstone with character, longevity and a strong connection to this part of the world, Australian sapphire is an exceptional choice.
