This 39.59ct Australian sapphire rough was acquired from a major rough sapphire auction featuring more than one million carats of material.
Among the vast quantity of sapphire offered, this crystal was one of only two individual rough sapphires presented as a standalone lot. Rather than being grouped into a larger parcel, it was separated and offered on its own merit — recognised for its size, form, and cutting potential.
Selected by The Sapphire Merchant, this piece represents a rare opportunity to acquire an important Australian sapphire before cutting, and to take part in its transformation from natural crystal into a finished gemstone.
Offered as part of The Uncut Reserve, this sapphire invites the buyer into the process before its final identity has been revealed. Rather than simply purchasing a completed gem, the client is able to review the cutting possibilities, understand the trade-offs, and help guide the final direction of the stone.
In its natural rough form, this sapphire shows a green to yellow-green body colour, with golden-green depth and natural Australian character. Depending on orientation and cutting style, the finished stone may reveal a medium to medium-dark green tone. Potential cutting options may include an oval, cushion, shield, freeform, or custom design, although the final recommendation will be guided by the shape and internal structure of the rough.
As with all natural sapphire rough, the final result cannot be guaranteed before cutting. Finished weight, clarity, colour, and inclusion visibility will depend on how the stone responds during preforming and faceting. The Sapphire Merchant will guide the process with the aim of balancing beauty, weight retention, durability, and the strongest possible finished appearance.
This is more than a loose sapphire purchase. It is a private sapphire commission — beginning at the source, shaped through expert cutting, and documented as part of your stone’s story.
Reserve this Australian sapphire rough and begin the journey from rough to finished gem with The Sapphire Merchant.

Australian Sapphires
Australian sapphires are prized across Australia and New Zealand because they are unearthed from the red soil beneath us. Mined from the historic sapphire fields of New South Wales and Queensland, including Inverell, Glen Innes, and Anakie, these natural sapphires display a rich spectrum of deep blue, teal, green, yellow, and the highly sought-after Australian parti sapphire. Formed in basalt lava flows millions of years ago, Australian sapphires are renowned for their inky colour saturation, making them an ideal choice for engagement rings and custom sapphire designs.
Commercial sapphire mining in Australia began in the late 1800s, with the country becoming one of the world’s leading sapphire producers throughout the 20th century. Today, Australian sapphire mining is heavily regulated, with strict environmental management and land rehabilitation standards in place, a key consideration for ethically minded jewellery buyers in Australia and New Zealand. Valued for their ethical sourcing, durability, and bold natural colour, Australian sapphires remain a favourite among custom jewellery clients across Australasia seeking gemstones of integrity and enduring beauty.
