Sapphires of Madagascar
Off the southeastern coast of Africa, the gem-rich island of Madagascar holds rare treasures deep within its earth. Colonised by the French in 1897, the island's potential for precious gemstones was known. However, it wasn't until the rare discovery of blue sapphires of exceptional quality in 1994, far south of the island in the district of Andranondambo, that the world's attention was truly captured. This discovery has significantly impacted the gemstone industry, adding a new chapter to Madagascar's rich gemstone heritage. Subsequently, in 1998, the Ilakaka deposit was unearthed, producing world-class sapphires in a mesmerising array of colours.
